Ellen asked:
I have severe endometriosis, treated with an iud for 2.5 yrs. Endo symtoms are back but worse now…options – iud + pill or hysterectomy. Doc says I will not reach natural menopause due to endo – surgery is inevitable at some point. I am 36 and have had all the kids I will have. help!

if your children are very young and you need to be very active to take care of them, it may be worthwhile to put off having the surgery.
You will be unable to do any lifting for months after ward and will likely be unable to move much at all.
If at all possible, wait until your children are too old or big to be carried because you won’t be able to lift them.
Hi. I had a hysterectomy at 34 for the exact same reason. My doctor told me i had the worst case of endometriosis that he had ever seen. After i was diagnosed, i went on the pill first to see if that would help. It worked for about 2 years, then i got worse. By then, i was so tired of bleeding and being in pain, surgery was the best thing to do. I was done with having children, and had a hysterectomy the new way ( with lasers ), and went home the next day after surgery, and was shopping 3 weeks later. I don’t regret having surgery because i got back my quality of life after being sick for about 4 years. I would try the pill if you want to buy some time, it has helped most people i know that tried it. Usually surgery is inevitable for this condition, i was just glad to get it over with and move on. The older you get, the harder it becomes to recover from surgery, so the younger you are, the easier it will be for you. Good luck with whatever decision you make. Feel better soon.
